The Fire Island Pines is the
most flamboyant, gorgeous, and expensive community on Fire
Island. Its characteristic roller coaster boardwalks ribbon the
hilly terrain under a canopy of lush foliage. Many of the nearly
700 homes are lavish, with elaborate gardens, and there are more
swimming pools here than anywhere else on the island. Careful
planning and large building lots give a spacious feel and insure
the privacy of its residents. Development proliferated in the
1950's, when the fashion and design world made the Pines their
playground. Though the architecture is eclectic and some consider
it extreme, the homes here are fabulous. |

The boot-shaped harbor is reminiscent of
European resorts. The shops, restaurants, and the famous three
story Boatel are clustered around one side, while spectacular
yachts and sailboats fill the 85 slips. Seaplanes land on the
harbor's far side. Ferry service is direct from Sayville.
Partying is legendary in the Pines. As the
sun begins its descent, the Tea Dance begins. Centered around the
Pavilion near the harbor, hundreds of beautiful people, bronzed
by the sun, dressed to kill, gather for the ritual of being seen.
Famous faces from New York's arts and fashion world can often be
spotted among the crowd. Dinners are late and leisurely, often
starting at midnight. Parties here are elaborate, the guest lists
long, and thrown with great style. Afterwards, the revelry
continues at the Pavilion's disco. The beach is the place for
rest and recuperation before the partying begins again.

The Pines community commits itself
wholeheartedly to fundraising events, often hosting several in a
weekend. They raise funds for political and service organizations
such as Dancers Respond to AIDS, God's Love We Deliver, Friends
in Deed, Miracle House, SAGE, and New York City's Lesbian and Gay
Community Center, just to name a few. The annual Morning Party
for Gay Mens Health Crisis in August is an all day party on the
beach attended by thousands.
The Fire Island Pines Property Owners
Association (FIPPOA) organizes art exhibits, first rate musical
productions, and house tours, all to help and preserve the
community. The Pines Conservation Society works to maintain the
dunes and the town's magnificent public grounds.
Definitely eccentric, completely fun, The
Pines is not to be missed.
